In an Omaha studio portrait by Edric L. Eaton, William F. Cody presents an early version of his Buffalo Bill persona. Holding the Springfield rifle he had christened Lucretia Borgia, his long hair and buckskins telegraph a frontier identity then just taking shape in popular dime novels. Made years before his famous Wild West show, the photograph fixes the army scout at the precise moment of his transformation into a living legend.
