Jackson Bros. · Omaha, Nebraska

Date
c. 1869–1872
Medium
stereoview
Subject
townscape

From the newly cleared site of Nebraska’s first territorial capitol, the Jackson Brothers survey the young city of Omaha. Their camera looks north-northeast across a dense fabric of wood-frame structures toward the Missouri River bottoms and the Iowa bluffs on the horizon. This specific vantage affords a narrow temporal window between the capitol’s 1869 demolition and the start of construction on Omaha High School in 1872. The composition is the third in a numbered sequence documenting the city’s topography from this public ground.
