The veteran Alexander Milliner, photographed for the Reverend E. B. Hillard's 1864 volume The Last Men of the Revolution. He was one of just six surviving pensioners documented for the book, a project to capture living links to the nation's founding. Milliner's service as a drummer boy in the Continental army began a life that would also include time aboard the frigate Constitution during the War of 1812. This hand-tipped albumen portrait is paired in the publication with a chromolithograph of his New York residence.
