William Hutchings, Carte-de-Visite Portrait and Residence

William Hutchings, born in 1764, was among the last living veterans of the Revolutionary War when he sat for this Hartford portrait in his one hundred and first year. The carte-de-visite appears as the fifth in a series by Rev. E. B. Hillard and is presented with a chromolithograph of the subject's home. A period pencil inscription beneath the photograph records his death two years later, completing the record of a life that spanned from the colonial era to the end of the Civil War.
