The photographer Julius Meyer made this portrait of Rushing Bear at his Omaha establishment, the Indian Wigwam. As an interpreter who traded with Sioux, Pawnee, and other delegations, Meyer was positioned to document named individuals during the final treaty years. The period pencil notation on the verso, identifying the sitter by name, survives as a crucial piece of evidence, securing a personal history frequently absent from mass-produced Western views.
