Origin
Kearney, Nebraska

Departing from the park's famous monuments, Solomon Butcher here records the Government Road his own wagon traveled between photographic stops. The engineered route itself becomes the subject, its graded surface curving between a man-made cut-bank and a wall of dense pine. While devoid of figures, the fresh ruts in the foreground powerfully imply the photographer’s own presence and the human effort required to traverse this landscape. This exposure documents the experience of transit rather than the arrival at a destination.
