Solomon D. Butcher & Son captured the Gibbon River breaking over the Yellowstone caldera rim, choosing an atypically low vantage that emphasizes the sculptural mass of the rock over the picturesque fall. As the earliest numbered view yet surfaced from Butcher's 1909 expedition, this card effectively redraws his route through the park. Its position in the sequence repositions the start of the journey and suggests an entry from the west or south, a departure from the conventional northern loop.
