Oglala Lakota women and children prepare meat for preservation at the Pine Ridge Agency in a real photo postcard by Solomon D. Butcher & Son. The Butchers are best known as the definitive chroniclers of Nebraska homesteaders, but they also worked on the surrounding Plains reservations. These photographs, including this view from South Dakota, constitute a less common and distinct chapter of the studio’s extensive output. This example was postally used in rural Nebraska just months after the image was made.
