Sioux Eating Dinner on White Clay

Origin
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, on White Clay Creek near the Nebraska line

An Oglala family takes an outdoor meal along White Clay Creek, just south of the Pine Ridge Reservation. The real photo postcard comes from Solomon D. Butcher & Son, the great documentarians of the Nebraska frontier. While the studio is known primarily for its extensive record of homesteader life, its work at Pine Ridge is comparatively scarce, lending this quiet, everyday scene particular resonance.
